I am a skier, I am a traileur, I am a marksman, I am a ninja, I am a cyclist, I am a "kayaker", a "logger", I am an axe thrower, a pancake weaver, I am an Olympian, I am a lover of my brunette...
I am a sports lover....
My name is Marc-André Bédard.

August 23, 2016....

My beautiful brunette Claude and I were finishing packing up, after spending a week camping, away from work, away from the networks, no Internet. We were living the good life!

Greeting a deer passing in front of us, we were ready to head home. It was at that very moment that Claude panicked and said to me, "Marco, stop the car! "Needless to say, when Claude Godbout, asks you in this way to stop the car, well you stop the car!

And I, looked at her with my mouth open waiting for the big news... at least I hope so... because there, even the deer has stopped on the side of the road! That's when she said,"It's Battlefrog... it's closing up shop.

That's how I lost my job in August 2016.

My work with Battlefrog was extremely difficult, but so satisfying. After almost a year behind the wheel of my events, including my last two in Trois-Rivières and Vancouver, this annoucement arrived, not as shocking as you might expect. I had given it my all to be the very best race director.

The "catch" of all bad news... now what do we do? We get up and look far ahead.

It didn't take long to receive phone calls to offer me different jobs.

Faster than I could have imagined.

And, there was this Facebook message from Patrick Aubé (now the president of JustRun), who wrote to me at 9:49 p. m. on the same day as the announcement of the closure of Battlefrog.

"Hi Marco, my company is going to invest a lot in OCR in 2017 and we would like to have you on our team. I'd like to meet you. »

In the evening, at around 10:47 p. m., I answer him politely:

"Wow, great Patrick, I have meetings this week and big projects coming up, but I'm open to meeting you soon! Give me a few days to get back on my feet! »

Today, after 3 years, I got to know Patrick.

He soon answered me, at 11:18 p.m., 31 minutes later... he wrote to me:

"Lol... Okay, now you're back on your feet. We acquired some companies this week. I know your background, I know what you can do. I'll come and see you as soon as your head is free... tomorrow? »

We didn't know each other. But he managed to pick my curiosity.

And, he still gave me 31 minutes to pull myself together!

We decided to meet the following Tuesday.

Patrick told me that he planned to participate in the creation of a new 100% Canadian-based event company, JustRun, which was looking to build the project with a team of enthusiasts to get into the racing events. I hung up on him when he said,"We would like you to create a new concept in your image. »

At that moment, if I had been told that I would have my ugly face carved on a 16-foot axe, I wouldn't even have found it funny.

I have always been proud of my Bedard and Grenon roots.

After discussing my ideas with Patrick, I knew where I wanted to go. My experience with the big American ship "think big" BattleFrog taught me well what to do and, above all, what not to do! I would be lying if I said I loved every minute with Battlefrog, but it definitely made me who I am now.

The success I seek is in me, in my blood. I have always been proud of my roots. My grandparents are the coolest. I can't imagine how much my great-grandparents must have been real animals. I knew that this sense of pride would give me the strength to never count the hours, dollars or sweat to pay tribute to them.

How about we go back in time?

In the years when our grandparents and their grandparents worked hard in the woods, many Canadians were loggers by profession. At the turn of the 19th century, half of the population spent their winters in our forests, harvesting the wood that was used to build our cities as we know them today. It was one, if not THE most dangerous profession, with nearly 30% of workers losing their lives. Canucks were known in the field for their strength and endurance.

My ancestors and yours were true "superheroes". We don't have to look too far in history to find heroes, your grandparents are probably the toughest people you know.

The idea of paying tribute to our roots has always been in my head. My grandfather was a real woodsman, and the history of Canadian lumberjacks has always fascinated me. The "Lumberjacks" shows are events that pay tribute to this ancient discipline and I wanted to continue this tradition with a race.

Obstacle racing has been a passion for 8 years, but sport has been a passion since I was a child. My life experiences have given me an idea of what I like about sports challenges, and what I don't like.

In recent years, I have had the opportunity to make a name for myself, especially among Americans who called me the "NorthMan » I guess the beard and the plaid flannel I have always loved wearing. And perhaps also because of the french canadianaccent or the fact that I liked trailblazing wild trails machete and axe in hand!

That's part of what the Northman Race is!

I was looking to create a different concept, as much for Mr. and Mrs. everyone as for accomplished athletes.

This is where Northman Race stands out

The event, accessible to all, takes place on a 6 to 10 km course, with about 30 obstacles, all based on the old time lumberjacks. The course is intended for beginners looking for a good time with family or friends as well as world class athletes.

Knowing my background, I couldn't offer a race without having the best possible scenario for my friends and competitors who are looking for an additional challenge. For accomplished athletes, the distance, number of obstacles and difficulty are increased to 11, in addition to the time, prizes and purses of course.

All this in order to offer Canadians the chance to go back a few years and relive what our ancestors experienced. Talk to your parents, grandparents and you will see that we all have a little bit of logger in our blood.

Climbing, sawing, log driving and even axe throwing are just the beginning of your adventure in the North!

Experience Northman at your next race and don't forget your plaid shirt!

Thank you! Thank you!

I couldn't finish this article without thanking the people who helped me make this dream come true.

Thanks to Mama Grenon and Papa Bédard for everything!

Thank you, our participants, to experience what we are trying to offer you. Thank you for answering the call; now go and visit your parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents. Learn about their life experiences before it's too late. Be proud of your name, be proud of your family, become a "NorthWoman" again, become a "NorthMan" again.

Thanks to JustRun, Patrick, and the whole team.
